A VERY close second to Nitecore, this was ridiculously close to a tie. Placing Nitecore in the Runner-Up position was a matter of comparing comparable flashlights (i.e. the Nitecore MH23 vs the Fenix E28R, their features and price points).

Ultimately, Fenix took first place, but not by much!

These are a perfect option when you want to illuminate the surrounding area for the whole group … or if the group splits up … or if you need a hands-free light source.

Best Rechargeable Camping Flashlights

Traditional flashlights use disposable batteries, which can be a hassle to carry around and often run out when you need them most.

Disposable batteries are not only a hassle to carry around, but they also create waste that is harmful to the environment.

The following rechargeable flashlights are the perfect solution! Not only do they provide high performance and versatility, but they also save you from having to constantly buy new batteries. And they help reduce waste.

Nitecore TINI 2 Rechargeable Keychain LED Flashlight

Description:

The TINI 2 is the Yoda of the flashlight universe.

Judge it by its size, you won’t!

At OFHQ, this is our everyday carry. The uniform beam is capable of blazing 500 lumens to a distance of 97 yards … out of a less-than-1-ounce unit!

The built-in lithium-ion battery will deliver up to 60 hours on the lowest setting, 8+ hours at 15 lumens, 2.5 hours at 65 lumens, 44.5 minutes at 200 lumens, and 12.5 minutes at 500 lumens (Turbo Mode).

Wow. Just wow.

While it may not be the best for long night-hikes, it is certainly capable to take care of tasks in and around the campsite and while going through the motions of your day-to-day.

Pros

Cons

Description

The Goal Zero Torch 500 is a little flashlight that offers multiple-use options, is waterproof, and comes with a rechargeable battery.

The Torch 500 is okay for emergencies; however, solar charging is slow (can take up to 24 hrs. of direct sunlight for a full charge).

It features a 300 lumens spotlight and a 300 lumens floodlight, each with three different lumen-output settings. The increased 5200 mAh battery gives you plenty of power to charge phones and headlamps multiple times, or to boost your tablet.

The Torch 500 also features a built-in solar panel to recharge from the sun and a USB-C input port to charge from any USB source. So no matter where you are, you’ll be able to find a way to charge your Torch 500.

The Goal Zero Torch 500 is a great flashlight for the outdoors, emergencies, and everyday use.

Fenix E28R LED Rechargeable Flashlight

Comparable to the Nitecore MH23, Fenix’s E28R delivers slightly fewer lumens (1,500 vs 1,800) for half the price.

Our personal favorite!

The Fenix E28R is a high-performance flashlight that can blast a maximum of 1500 lumens a distance of 656ft (200m).

Powered by an included 18650 (3400mAh) Li-ion battery, this flashlight is fully rechargeable via its USB Type-C charging port.

The ultrathin optical lens creates a soft and balanced beam while the convenient side switch activates all lighting modes and includes a battery level indicator.

The waterproof and dustproof design can handle more than just around-the-house tasks; take it on a hike, use at work, or keep it in care for emergencies.

Keenstone Rechargeable LED Flashlight 2 Pack

The Keenstone LED flashlight has had some significant success among consumers; however, we are hesitant about the fact that they do not offer a warranty (only a 30-day money-back guarantee).

Still, they’ve earned their place and are worth a look.

Description

The Streamlight 75458 Stinger DS LED HL provides 800 lumens of maximum illumination. Its wide beam pattern gives you a bright floodlight that will light up the area around you, and the switches on the head and tail cap provide maximum ease for switching between light modes.

Compact and extremely powerful, the Stinger DS LED HL rechargeable flashlight offers 3 microprocessor-controlled intensity modes, strobe mode and the latest in high power LED technology.

The combination of rechargeable batteries and the C4 LED results in one of the lowest operating costs of any flashlight made.

Still, for the price, it could be more powerful and provide longer battery life.

Best Battery-Powered Camping Flashlights

While rechargeable flashlights are becoming more and more popular, there are still many benefits of traditional flashlights with replaceable batteries.

While more wasteful and, in the long run, more expensive to power, sometimes it may be the better option.

Traditional flashlights with replaceable batteries are a better choice for situations where a power source for recharging is unavailable or undependable.

Read on to learn about some high-performing traditional flashlights that will accept those old-fashioned alkalines.

Description

The Goal Zero Torch 500 is an efficient light source that offers multiple-use options, is waterproof, and comes with a rechargeable battery.

The Torch 500 is okay for emergencies; however, solar charging is slow (can take up to 24 hrs. of direct sunlight for a full charge).

It features a 300 lumens spotlight and a 300 lumens floodlight, each with three different light settings.

What is the Best Flashlight for Camping?

Determining the best flashlight for you requires some thought with regards to when, where, and in what conditions you plan to use it.

For instance, if you plan to use your camping, whether you chose a battery-powered or rechargeable model depends on whether you will have the ability to recharge it or if it would be better just to take along some AA’s.

Consider the following when choosing the features that a flashlight should have to be best for you and then refer to our reviews above to narrow your search:

  1. Would a rechargeable or battery-powered flashlight be better suited for the conditions you will be using it in?
  2. Does size matter? Would a keychain flashlight be ideal or do you prefer a 5-inch long Maglite?
  3. How powerful do you need it to be? Are the basic 300 lumens enough or do you want to crank it to 1,800 lumens? Brighter is not always better (arguably) and can radically affect battery life. Perhaps a flashlight with variable brightness controls is the way to go.
  4. Do you need it to be waterproof or just water-resistant?
  5. Will the basic white LED light suit your needs or do you prefer to have a red LED night-vision option?
  6. Would a belt clip, headband, hat clip, or lanyard be a desired feature? Check for those.
  7. Is it backed by a decent warranty? At OFHQ, our preferred brand is NItecore with their Limited Lifetime Warranty. We wouldn’t settle for less.

How Many Lumens Do I Need for Camping Flashlight?

The answer to this is one of opinion and preference. The fact of the matter is that, when camping, your eyes will naturally adjust to the darkness substantially as dusk sets in; therefore, you don’t need a handheld lighthouse to get the job done.

Even something as low as 300 lumens is sufficient for navigating your campsite and the campgrounds when car camping.

If, on the other hand, you are wilderness or primitive camping far away from other campers and light sources, more lumens (500+) may be preferential for seeing further into the night.

A nugget from 20 years of experience: Using a bright flashlight at night hinders your eye’s natural ability to adjust to the dark requiring you to constantly have a flashlight on hand.

Allowing your eyes to adjust naturally without the aid of bright white LED light frees up your hands to perform simple tasks. Having said that, look for a flashlight with variable brightness control and a red light mode.

Also, take care not to shine a powerful flashlight directly into your eyes or those of others … unless using it as a self-defense tool. In that case, unleash the fury of 1,800 lumens at your foe!

Why Do We Need a Flashlight in Camping?

Not all campsites are well lit and, even if they are, power outages occur just as they would in town.

Few things are worse than catching your toe on a tree root in the dark and biting asphalt on your way to the bathhouse.

Also, while camping is a safe family activity, going anywhere at night requires a stronger sense of situational awareness, which a flashlight can afford.

Finally, taking a simple evening walk around the campgrounds will cross your path with the occasional motorist who might not see you without that flashlight shining ahead.

What is the Most Powerful Flashlight Available?

Technically, it’s the motorcycle-sized leviathan by Hacksmith (1,414,224 lumens)!

But, let’s get practical … and portable.

The world’s current brightest handheld flashlight is the Imalent MS18 (100,000 lumens and 1,350 meter-range). At almost $700, it is sure to enlighten even the darkest moments of your life … and leave a dark hole in your wallet.

However epically cool, this flashlight fell outside the scope of this review for practical camping purposes.

What to Look for When Choosing a Flashlight

Flashlight features are as numerous as the brands that make them; however, here are the critical features to consider when selecting a flashlight.

1. Light Production

The lumen is the unit of measure for light output. One solitary lumen is the equivalent of a birthday candle one foot away.

The more lumens, the brighter the flashlight, the greater the energy use.

Reading LED lights will deliver about 20 lumens while an average flashlight typically features 100-150 lumens (great for in-home use). A 60-watt lightbulb puts out 750-850 lumens.

For outdoor activities and task work, 1,000 lumens or more is recommended (although, we regard 200-500 lumens as sufficient for around the campsite).

However, out in the wilderness, flashlights with 1,000-3,500 lumens will do nicely.

2. Beam Distance

The distance, measured in meters, before the light’s beam diminishes to the brightness of moonlight (generally considered sufficient for safe outdoor travel).

More lumens does not mean greater distance, however. The flashlight must be equipped with a way to narrow or widen the beam to increase its distance or field of coverage.

3. Beam Type

The beam type controls the beam distance and, for a camping flashlight, we recommend an adjustable beam type to suit a variety of situations.

4. Brightness Settings

A good camping flashlight should feature different light modes or variable light settings that adjust the lumen output of the light. This allows you to conserve power in situations where only a little light is needed.

5. Variable Light Modes

It’s also better for star gazing!

6. Runtime

Runtime in hours is directly affected by light output. The more lumens, the less battery life.

7. Battery Type

8. Material and Design

The majority of flashlight bodies are made of either plastic or aluminum alloy. For greater impact resistance, some have stainless steel in the ends of the body.

The most typical body design is cylindrical, although some versions are profiled to resist rolling away when placed on a surface. Additionally, the body’s surface might be textured to provide a solid grip when holding the flashlight

9. Size and Weight

Typically, a larger, heavier battery houses larger, longer-lasting batteries; however, as technology advances, this is not always the case. Lightweight, compact options with substantial battery life are being introduced to the market more frequently.
